Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane to play county cricket for Leicestershire following West Indies tour

After concluding his two-Test assignment with the Indian team against the West Indies, Ajinkya Rahane, a senior Indian batter and former captain, will join the English county side Leicestershire in division two. He recently made a heroic comeback to the Indian team for the World Test Championship final against Australia after a blistering outing in this year’s IPL edition.

In January, he had signed a contract with Leicestershire to play eight first-class games and participate in the Royal London Cup (a domestic 50-over competition) from June to September, following his involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Chennai Super Kings.

However, due to his return to the Indian Test team, Rahane was unable to immediately join his county side after the conclusion of the IPL. This marks Rahane’s second county stint, having previously played for Hampshire in the 2019 season when he was omitted from the 50-over World Cup squad.

Ajinkya Rahane scored 89 runs in the Indian team’s first innings during the WTC final, recently reached the milestone of 5,000 runs in Test cricket, having played 83 matches. While many Indian players will shift their focus to 50-over cricket, the 35-year-old will have the opportunity to play more red-ball cricket throughout September.

He will then return to India for the domestic season before embarking on a tour of South Africa in December. He has showcased remarkable performances outside of India throughout his career. He has proven to be a valuable asset for the team in overseas conditions.

His technique, patience, and composure make him a reliable batsman in unfamiliar conditions. Rahane has played crucial innings in countries like Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand, exhibiting his skill and temperament.

His contributions with the bat have often played a significant role and he was also India’s best batter in the one-off WTC Test Final at Oval.
