Ahmed Shehzad, Pakistan, Century

Who is the youngest centurion in the history of the T20 World Cup?

The T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and Bangladesh on March 30, 2014, was a memorable one, especially for Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad. Shehzad made history by becoming the youngest player ever to score a century in an ICC T20 World Cup match in Bangladesh.

Ahmed Shehzad’s innings was a masterclass in T20 batting. He scored an unbeaten 111 runs off 62 balls with a combination of aggressive shots and intelligent play. His century comprised 10 boundaries and 5 sixes, helping Pakistan reach a daunting total of 190 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.

This was not just a personal achievement for Shehzad but also a watershed event for Pakistani cricket, as he became the first Pakistani player to score a century in T20 internationals.

Shehzad’s performance exemplified his expertise and temperament. He managed his innings superbly, accelerating at vital points to keep Pakistan’s run rate competitive. His knock provided a firm framework for the other batsmen to play freely around him. His century had a significant influence, giving Pakistan the momentum it needed to dominate the match.

Bangladesh’s chase began well, but they struggled to maintain the requisite run rate against a disciplined Pakistan bowling attack. Despite a strong start from their openers, Bangladesh’s batting order was unable to capitalize on the early momentum. The middle-order batters struggled to score easily, owing to the pressure placed by Pakistan’s bowlers.

Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal were especially efficient, taking key wickets while maintaining a precise line and length. Gul’s ability to bowl yorkers and slower deliveries in the late overs, paired with Ajmal’s brilliant variations, stymied Bangladesh’s batters. Bangladesh eventually scored only 140 for 7 in 20 overs, falling 50 runs short. This victory was critical for Pakistan because it increased their chances of advancing to the tournament’s semifinals.

Shehzad’s century was greatly praised, not only for its statistical significance but also for the method by which it was accomplished. His innings underlined his potential as a top-order batsman capable of playing on a grand scale. Shehzad’s century, at 22 years and 127 days, makes him the youngest player ever to strike a century in a T20 World Cup competition, cementing his place among international cricket’s rising stars.
