Who could replace Emery at Arsenal?

Arsenal sacked Unai Emery on Friday following a string of poor results this season. The Spaniard was appointed manager of the Gunners during the summer of 2018 and succeeded the departed Arsene Wenger. Emery’s appointment failed to yield positive growth at the Emirates. The club finished fifth in the Premier League last season and they look uncertain to make a return to the Champions League this season.

That being said, Emery did make some positive developments within the squad. He took the team to the final of the Europa League last season which it lost to Chelsea. He also uncovered two stars for the club in Lucas Torriera and Frenchman Matteo Guendouzi.

Gunners club legend Freddie Ljunberg is set to take charge of the club on a temporary basis. One gets the impression that the Swede could just be appointed as the club’s full-time manager if he impresses and surpasses expectations during his short time in charge. The club could end up emulating Manchester United who employed their own legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager last season after he managed to over-achieve during his stint as temporary manager of the club.

Who are the current leading candidates for the Gunners job?

According to a report which was published by Sky Sports, Manchester City assistant manager Mikel Arteta, former Juventus boss Max Allegri, Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti and Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo are among the leading candidates to succeed Emery.

On paper, the easiest to recruit will probably be Arteta and Allegri. Allegri has been without work since the end of last season after he parted ways with Juventus. Arteta has attracted large praise for the work that he has done as assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He will now be keen to launch his own managerial career.
