Who can possibly captain India for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in absence of Kohli and Sharma?

The Indian cricket team is riding on the success in last few years due to robust domestic infrastructure and IPL which has added a lot of talent to their armoury.

India’s bench strength in the men’s team can be vividly understood by the fact that Men in Blue recently registered victory against Kangaroos twice on Australian soil where the second victory came in absence of their star studded lineup including the likes of Kohli, Bumrah, Shami and Jadeja.

With so many players coming from the ranks it will not be different to say that India can create three different teams for all three formats.

This holds true in context as the Indian team will be playing next month to play the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship final and the red ball series against England.

At the same time, different boys in blue will be playing the white-ball series in the same month in Sri Lanka.

As the players like Kohli, Sharma, Bumrah, Pant will be traveling for England it will be interesting to see who will captain India in the white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

The two contenders who are on the list is Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as both are the experienced campaigner with bat and ball respectively.

Recently Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta detailed his opinion on the same and stated that Dhawan and Kumar are the two contenders to lead the side in Sri Lanka.

“Obviously, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul are not available. The senior-most player available on that side is Shikhar, so Shikhar (captaincy option) I guess. One of the questions was ‘who do I see captaining the side?’, I mentioned Shikhar, let’s not forget, if Bhuvneshwar is fit and ready to play, he is a good captain candidate as well for that series.”

“I am not surprised (Kumar’s omission from Test squad). They have already got 6 fast bowlers (for the England tour). I understand that those conditions might help Bhuvneshwar but he has not played red-ball cricket for 2 to 2 and half years. And he has struggled with his fitness post-2018.”

“You don’t know whether his body will take playing 5-day cricket. As a bowler, if you’re playing, you might have to bowl 20 overs a day and come back the next day as well. I don’t know whether you want to take that chance,”  he said.
