World Cup 2023: What will be the role of Umpires in the Upcoming World Cup to be held in India?

The biggest and most anticipated tournament in the sport of Cricket is back after a gap of four years. The 50-over Cricket World Cup is all set to be played this year in the months of October and November in India.

It is going to be a 10-team tournament with all the matches to be played in a round-robin format where each team will play all the other teams once. Eight teams have earned direct qualification by finishing in the top 8 positions in the ICC Super League points table whereas the other two teams will be qualified through the Qualifiers to be played in June.

The last edition of the World Cup was played in 2019 where England emerged as the Champions. A lot has changed though from the last edition to this time such as rules, authority to field umpires, team structures, etc.

In this article, we will talk about what is going to be the role of match officials and umpires in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after all the amendments.

ICC is constantly looking toward reducing the role of field umpires in controversial decisions during a cricket match. Earlier, ICC took away the right of announcing overstepping no-balls from field umpires and gave it to the third umpire. Now, they have done the same with the soft signal calls when a doubtful catch is taken. It means the soft signal rule is now scrapped.

After the pandemic, the number of reviews available to each team has also increased from one per inning to two per inning. In the IPL this year, captains were allowed to take reviews for wides and no-balls as well but this rule is yet to be considered in international cricket.

World Cup is a once-in-a-four-year tournament and there is no absolutely no margin for mistakes hence ICC is looking to use technology at the highest level. Umpires are bound to make some mistakes due to uncertain circumstances and hence the role of field umpires is reducing. Third umpires have become a little more involved in the game than they were earlier as now many decisions are up to their discretion.

It is going to be really interesting to see how the umpires and match officials are going to match the expectations of the ICC and fulfill their roles with absolute transparency.
