What is the lowest team total by Sri Lanka in the history of the T20 World Cup?

The lowest team total is a record no team wants to be a part of and has their name against it in the record books. But the way our sport is designed, each and every team is bound to have a team score to their name that is the lowest for them. Let’s have a look at the match where the Sri Lankan cricket team scored its lowest ever team total in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

On May 9, 2010, in the 20th match of the 2009 T20 World Cup in Bridgetown, Australia won the toss and decided they would ask Sri Lanka to chase the target and bat first themselves. Everyone thought that the pitch had some kind of demon in it as the match started.

After electing to bat first, the Australian batters failed miserably as they were struggling big time against the Sri Lankan bowlers. Both openers got out cheaply, as the Kangaroos were 67/5 at the end of 11 overs in quick succession. But Cameron White and Michael Hussey stitched together an excellent partnership and helped the team post 168 runs on the board.

Chasing 169 in that match did not seem to be a difficult task, but surely a tricky one. Everyone thought that they would get to see an interesting finish to this game, but as soon as the second inning started, the Australian bowlers showed their magic on the cricket ground as the Sri Lankan batters went to the pavilion one after the other.

It was a dismal batting performance from the Asian side, as they were bundled out for just 87 runs in 16.2 overs, their lowest ever team score in the history of the T20 World Cup. They lost a match that they could have won if they had just stuck to the basics.

No Sri Lankan batter showed a fight, as Tillakaratne Dilshan was the highest scorer with 20 runs, and Mitchell Johnson took three wickets in the match. Cameron White was awarded the player of the match trophy in a historical match for the Sri Lankan cricket team.
