New Zealand, Bangladesh, T20 World Cup

What is the lowest team total by Bangladesh in the history of the T20 World Cup?

The Bangladesh cricket team has always been known to be an underdog in the cricket fraternity, especially in the T20 format, where they have done a lot of upsets in the past few years. The reason they are known as underdogs is the lack of experience the squad has, which has been clearly visible in a lot of their matches. A similar match where the inexperience overpowered them was when they made their lowest ever team total in T20 World Cup history while chasing an average score.

It was March 26, 2016, when the Bangladesh team was scheduled to play the New Zealand team at the Eden Gardens in the 28th match of the 2016 T20 World Cup. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first in the game.

The New Zealand batters started the inning well, but then suddenly the rest of the batting fell like dominoes, and they managed to score only 145/8 runs in 20 overs. Kane Williamson was the highest scorer in the inning with his knock of 42 runs off 32 balls at a strike rate of 131.

The Bangladesh team was asked to chase a modest total of 146, which looked like a pretty easy chase at the halfway mark in the match. But the New Zealand bowlers had other plans as they bowled brilliantly under the lights to bundle out Bangladesh for just 70 runs, their lowest ever team total in the history of the T20 World Cup, and denied them an easy victory.

Only three batters from the Bangladesh batting lineup reached a score of double digits, and the rest of the batters looked like walking wickets. No batter was able to score with a strike rate of over 100 other than Mustafizur Rahman.

The team could only score 70 runs in 15.4 overs and lost the match by a huge margin of 75 runs when they had just 146 to chase. Grant Elliott and Ish Sodhi took three wickets each, and Kane Williamson was awarded the player of the match award for his excellent knock in difficult conditions.
