We spend huge amounts to import garbage coaches’- Former Sri lankan skipper slams SLC for ignoring local talents

Arjuna Ranatunga

Former Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga who is always known for his outspoken nature recently criticised  SLC(Sri Lankan Cricket board) for importing garbage coaches and ignoring local talents.

His comment came on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s World Cup triumph under his leadership.

Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka thrashed Kangaroos in the final and they were so dominant throughout that world cup that they didn’t lose a single game.

Since then their best results came for the island nation in 2011 world cup under the leadership of Sangakkara where they finished as runner up losing to eventual champion India.

In recent years, the Islanders have struggled to do well not only in the World Cup but also in other tournaments and series. In the last edition of the tournament, they could not make it out of the group stages.

“We spend huge amounts to import garbage coaches. There is good (coaching) talent in the country, but they are going abroad because there is no recognition for them at home,” said Arjuna Ranatunga while marking the silver jubilee of the 1996 victory at a national ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He further stressed that some of our ex cricketers who have served Lankan cricket for long which includes names like Jayawardene, De Silva and Marvan Attapattu were among the best coaches in the world.

However some of the foreign coaches like Dav Whatmore and Tom Moody had a successful stint with the national team in the past.  As Whatmore was the coach of that Sri Lankan team who lifted the world cup title.
