Vernon Philander announces retirement from all forms of cricket

South-African all-rounder Vernon Philander has announced retirement from all forms of cricket just after the conclusion of the Test series against England. The all-rounder has made it clear that he wishes to take a permanent break from the International cricket after playing the four-match test series against England that is scheduled to start from the boxing day i.e., from 26th December.

Apparently, Philander was picked for the four-match test series against England. In his international career, spanning for more than 12 years, Philander has played 60 Tests, 30 ODIs and 7 T20 matches and took a total of 261 wickets and scored 1784 runs.

Vernon Philander made his national team debut for South Africa in 2007 when he turned out against Ireland in Belfast in an ODI where he took 4/12 in his spell. The 34-years-old all-rounder then made his Test debut and surprised the entire cricketing world with his rampaging spell against Australia, finishing with an impressive bowling figures of 5/15. In that match, the visitors were bundled out for just 47 runs in the second innings.

“I would like to hereby announce that I will be retiring from international cricket at the conclusion of the Test series against England. I feel that it is an appropriate time to conclude what has been an amazing journey. It has been an honor and privilege to have played alongside the very best in the game as well as being part of the best test team for a number of years. Philander said in a statement.”

“My entire focus and energy at this time are to help the Proteas beat England which I am really looking forward to. Looking forward to seeing you all there.” He further added.

So far, Vernon Philander has had a good cricketing career and he also thanked Cricket South Africa and the support staff for their continuous support.

Graeme Smith, the CSA acting director of cricket, and the former South African captain said that the paceman had a “huge impact” on the national team.

“Vernon has been an outstanding performer in the time that he has represented his country, especially in the Test format,” said Smith. “He has made a huge impact for the Proteas and has been at the frontline with the ball for most of his time in the set-up. He has given his best in every appearance and I think that how he has turned himself into an all-rounder has been particularly pleasing to watch.

“One of the many things that have stood out for me with Vern is his character, his determination and the way that he has always been up for a fight and a challenge has shown the heart of the man. He has really done himself and his family proud, and I hope he can finish his final series for South Africa with the same character and flair that has become synonymous with him.” Smith added.

Meanwhile, South Africa is all set to host England for four-match test series, followed by three ODIs and T20Is with the first test match starting from the Boxing Day Test at the Centurion.
