Petra Kvitova reveals some players may not join due to coronavirus restrictions

Two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova has said that some of the players may not travel to New York for the US Open this year if the current situation of the coronavirus restrictions persists.

The US Open is slated to begin from August 31 this year with no spectators at the court to witness the action.

Despite that, there are still concerns as the hosting country is still reporting thousands of coronavirus cases on a daily basis. Even the organizers have not yet clarified on the quarantine rules and safety protocols for players once they reach the country.

“I know a few players will definitely not go if the restrictions are like they are now,” Kvitova told BBC in a video conference.

Defending US Open men’s singles champion Rafael Nadal also expressed his reservations of not playing in the tournament due to the ongoing situation. While the current world number one Novak Djokovic who just recovered from coronavirus also stated his tentativeness to participate in the event.

The 30-year-old Kvitova said, “I’m still thinking of what everything will look like, what the restrictions will be, how many people we can take and if they quarantine us.”

Kvitova also stated that it is a weird experience playing behind locked doors and no spectators and as a player, she wouldn’t intend on playing the Grand Slam event in such conditions.

Former World number one Serena Williams is making her return in the international circuit after the coronavirus pandemic by playing in Kentucky Open starting from August 10, and chances are she might also play in the US Open this year.
