Dominic Thiem becomes 1st Austrian player to reach in US Open Singles Final

It was evident that when Djokovic was out from the ongoing US Open as he has defaulted during the game and all the top players like Nadal, Murray and Federer is not taking part in the mega event. Thiem was one of the favourites to reach in the US Open final.

He didn’t disappoint his fans and defeated Russian star player Denil Medvedev by 6-2, 7-6, 7-6 in the semi-final clash at the Arthur Ashe stadium to become the first Austrian to reach at the US Open Final.

“After the first set, it could easily have been two sets to one down. I played my best tennis at the ends of the sets, and both tiebreaks were amazing” US Open’s official website quoted Thiem as saying.

“Tiebreakers are really mentally a tough thing. I don’t like them at all, to be honest,” He added.

He will be facing another Champion player Alexander Zverev in the final who came back from two sets down to clinch victory against Pablo Carreno Busta by 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinal clash.

However Zverev also created a new feat as he became the second German player to reach at the US Open singles final since Michael Stich in 1994.

He is currently World Number 3 ranked player which he attained on 2nd March 2020. He has clinched 16 ATP tour singles titles, including the title at BNP Paribas Open in 2019 by beating Roger Federer.

Thiem reached in the semifinal round of 2016 French Open along with playing finals in 2018 and 2019 where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal on both the occasions. His dream of lifting the French Open title was crushed by the Spanish star player.
