Sterling Comes Out In Support Of Gomez After Defender Gets Booed Against Montenegro

England secured a huge win over Montenegro in the recent Euro qualifiers courtesy Harry Kane’s hat-trick, but the match grabbed the headlines for wrong reasons.

The match was not only important for England in terms of securing their qualification to the Euro Cup, it was important from historical point of view as well. It was the 1000th match for the England national Football team.

But, the England fans rather than celebrating the occasion were bitterly disappointed about the fact that their star player Raheem Sterling couldn’t take part in the game.

There was a little bit of spat between Sterling and Joe Gomez ahead of the game which resulted in Sterling being suspended and the England fans were not amused with it at all.

Gomez got away without any suspension as Gareth Southgate, the England manager, thought he was not at fault in the matter.

The centre-back was not included in the starting XI against Montenegro, but he came on as a substitute and just as he came on, the fans started booing him.

Southgate looked visibly upset about the reaction of the fans and Sterling also expressed his displeasure after the game as he took to twitter in support of his national teammate.

Here is Sterling’s tweet-

Many Football pundits are of the opinion that Sterling didn’t deserve the suspension that was handed to him as the spats keep happening in club and international Football all the time.

Steve Sidwell, while speaking on Sky Sports, said that the matter could probably have been brushed under the carpet. However, the culture that Gareth Southgate has built in the England set-up, he was not ready to shrug the matter off at all.

He was adamant on sending a clear message that such things wouldn’t be tolerated.

Sterling’s absence didn’t affect England’s performance too much as they dominated the entire game even without the Manchester City winger.
