Sri-Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya enters history books! Breaks a 71-year-old record.

31-year-old Sri-Lankan Left-arm off spinner Prabath Jayasuriya broke a record which stood for almost 71 years. It happened during the 2nd Test between Sri-Lanka and Ireland at the Galle International stadium. Many would wonder if Prabath is of the same bloodline as Sanath Jayasuriya but there isn’t anything of that sort.

Talking about the record he made, Prabath is now among those elite bowlers who completed 50 Test wickets by playing in less than 10 matches. The Sri-Lankan overtook Alf Valentine for this record and is now the joint-second fastest bowler to complete a half-century of Test wickets by dismissing Ireland’s Paul Stirling in the 2nd innings for just 1 run.

The Sri-Lankan Island is known for producing world class bowlers like Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Rangana Herath, Lasith Malinga among others. Prabath Jayasuriya could well be the next big player in Sri-Lankan cricket.

The pace in which Prabath accumulated 50 wickets should only benefit the team and his own confidence. Heading into the future, the 31-year-old has the potential of helping the Lankan Lions lifting the ICC World Test Championship trophy in the upcoming WTC cycles.

He can be labelled as a Late bloomer as his debut at the age 30 against Australia. Jayasuriya picked up 12 wickets against the Aussies where he claimed his 50th Wicket as well.

If we talk about his performance in the 2 tests against Irish counterparts then he picked up 17 wickets in total – 10 in the first Test and 7 in the following Test. In both of the matches, Sri-Lanka registered massive victories. The first Test was clinched by an innings and 280 runs while the final one saw Ireland lose by again an innings and 10 runs.

Prabath Jayasuriya was crucial in both matches at Galle. Since his debut in 8th July 2022, Prabath Jayasuriya has notched 6 Fifers already. And in the list of bowlers playing fewer matches to 50 Test wickets, Charles Turner leads the way as he took only 6 matches to reach the milestone way back in 1887.
