IPL 2024: When and where to watch the final match between Sun Risers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders to be Played in Chennai?

Shreyas Iyer makes shocking revelation about his back injury

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), finds himself at the center of a controversy surrounding his back injury and its management. Ahead of the IPL 2024 final against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Iyer has shed light on his struggles, raising questions about communication gaps with the BCCI.

Shreyas Iyer claims that he raised concerns about his back while playing Test cricket after the 2023 ODI World Cup. “I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format,” he stated. However, these concerns were not acknowledged by the relevant authorities. He quoted, “When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it.”

Focus Shifts to IPL Success with KKR

Despite the reported disagreements, Shreyas Iyer focuses on his commitment to performing well. He states, “But at the same time the competition is with myself. When the IPL was approaching all I wanted to see was that I’ve put my best foot forward…”

A timeline of Shreyas Iyer’s back Issues and selection dilemmas

  • 2023: Iyer recovers from a back injury to participate in the Asia Cup and subsequently the ODI World Cup.
  • Early 2024: He is picked for the first two Tests against England but is excluded from the remaining three. Reports suggest he experienced back spasms but was cleared for selection.
  • Domestic Cricket: Iyer misses Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai, citing “back spasms” despite BCCI medical clearance. He is also seen attending a KKR pre-season camp during this time.
  • Central Contract Loss: While Iyer fulfilled the BCCI’s minimum match criteria, he loses his central contract. This coincides with BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s warning to players against prioritizing the IPL over domestic cricket.
  • Ranji Trophy Final: Back issues resurface, forcing Iyer off the field for two consecutive days.

The 29-year-old acknowledges the difficulties of adapting from Test cricket to the shorter format. His quote, “The transformation from red-ball cricket to white ball, it’s kind of difficult as a batsman and also as a bowler, I feel.”

Shreyas Iyer’s recent comments raise several questions. Did a communication lapse exist between him and the BCCI regarding his back injury? Was there a conflict of priorities between playing for India and focusing on the IPL? The BCCI has yet to offer a response to Iyer’s claims.

Focus on the IPL 2024 Final

While these questions stay, the immediate focus remains on the IPL 2024 final. Iyer’s leadership will be crucial as KKR seeks to clinch the championship title this time. However, the controversy surrounding his back injury and its management casts a shadow over the communication gap between the BCCI and the players and leaves room for further discussion.
