Ranji Trophy 2022/23 : Bengal score 307 runs at the end of Day 1

The 88th edition of India’s top first-class cricket tournament, the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, has reached the quarter-final stages, with eight teams competing for the ultimate prize. This tournament, which has been held since 1934, is one of India’s most important and historic.

Bombay – modern-day Mumbai – won the inaugural competition and have also won the most Ranji trophies in the game’s history. This season, 38 teams were split into five groups: Elite A, B, C, D, and Plate. After weeks of competition, only eight teams remain, with four advancing to the next round.

Meanwhile, after a scintillating quarter-finals, the semi-finals began today. Bengal and Madhya Pradesh met for the 1st Semis at the Holkar Stadium with the former team winning the bat and electing to bat first. After a shaky start to their innings, Bengal’s middle-order steadied their ship.

Karan Lal and Abhimanyu Easwaran opened the innings for Bengal with the latter getting removed for 27 off 33. Then came Sudip Kumar Gharami and he was joined by Anustup Majumdar following Karan Lal’s departure on 23. Sudip and Anustup made a partnership of 241 runs with both the batters getting to their Hundreds.

Bengal thanks to their dominant batting were able to win the first 2 sessions. Sudip Kumar Gharami got out for 112 while Anustup Majumdar departed for 120 off 206. Captain Manoj Tiwary and Shahbaz Ahmed are currently on the crease on 5 and 6 respectively.

As for the defending champions Madhya Pradesh, they will have to stage a comeback on day 2 after their bowlers flopped today. Avesh Khan and Gaurav Yadav took a wicket each while Anubhav Aggarwal took 2 wickets with an economy rate of 1.75.
