Raheem Sterling Axed From The England Side For Euro Qualifier Against Montenegro

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling is going to miss England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley after tensions surfaced between him and the Liverpool defender Joe Gomez on Monday.

Following a spat between the two after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Man City, Sterling attempted to grab Gomez by neck when the England team assembled at their training center on Monday, less than 24 hours after the Club match.

The intensity during the Liverpool vs Manchester City game was really high and not only the players on the pitch, but the managers of the two sides also seemed to lose their cool at times. However, the incident between Sterling and Gomez went a bit too far.

The England boss Gareth Southgate informed the reporters about Sterling’s axing yesterday.

“We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday. Unfortunately, the emotions of yesterday’s (Monday) game were still raw. My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken, he further added the step was crucial to prevent club rivalries from comprising performances.” Southgate said.

After being axed, Sterling shared his emotions via Instagram mentioning that he sorted things out with Gomez and moved on. He said that Football is a sport where emotions run high and he admitted that the emotions got better of him.

Raheem Sterling has become a key player for England in the past year or so. He was named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association last season as City won a domestic treble.

In his international career which has spanned across 7 years, Sterling has appeared in 55 games and has found the back of the net on 12 occasions.

England, after the game against Montenegro, would play another qualifier on Sunday away to Kosovo and Sterling could feature in that game.
