PSG keeper Navas speaks on relationship with Real Madrid

PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas has insisted that he bears no grudge towards his former club Real Madrid. The 32-year-old joined the French giants last summer following a controversial yet very successful spell with Real Madrid in Spain.

Navas El Chiringuito: “I don’t think about whether they failed me or who failed me.

“In Madrid maybe they thought it was no longer my time to be there. Then a team arrived that trusted me.”

The 32-year-old joined Los Blancos from Levante during the summer of 2014 after having impressed with Costa Rica during the 2014 World Cup. The North American nation exceeded expectations during that tournament in Brazil as they reached the quarter-finals and even advanced out of their group which also featured Italy and England, both of whom were consigned to first-round exits.

Navas famously dislodged the legendary Iker Casillas and became Madrid’s first-choice keeper. During his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, he went on to make 162 appearances in all competitions, helping the club to win one La Liga and three successive Champions League titles.

Many feel that Real’s treatment of Navas was horrendous

Navas was always solid whenever called upon by Madrid. It however seemed as the club never wanted him to be their first choice for the long-term. They famously tried to send him to Manchester United during the summer of 2015 in a deal which would have seen David de Gea arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu. The deal controversially ended up having to be ditched following a faulty fax machine mishap.

Madrid also demoted Navas to being second-choice keeper after Thibaut Courtois joined them from Chelsea during the summer of 2018. Courtois has failed to really exert himself at the Bernabeu and it can be argued that the club should have retained Navas as their number one.

PSG, however, will be hoping that the expertise and experience of Navas can finally help them to win the Champions League. The Champions League is the one major trophy that has evaded the French giants throughout the years.
