Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw is facing a minimum of three months on the sidelines due to a knee injury, which means he will likely miss a significant portion of India’s 2023-24 domestic cricket season, starting with the Irani Cup in Rajkot on October 1.
Shaw sustained this injury while playing for Northamptonshire in a one-day championship match against Durham, and subsequent scans revealed that the injury was more severe than initially thought.
After an initial consultation with a surgeon in London, Shaw returned to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for further assessment. Currently, the medical team is exploring all available treatment options, with surgery being considered as a last resort.

Sources informed that nothing will be rushed in terms of Prithvi Shaw’s recover and he will stay in contact with the NCA regarding the possibility of his return for the Ranji Trophy in January. However, it appears highly unlikely that he will be able to participate in the upcoming limited-overs competitions, starting with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on October 16.
This injury setback comes at a time when Shaw’s cricketing career was on the rise. He was the leading run-scorer in the one-day competition, amassing 429 runs in four innings, including a record-breaking 244 runs off 153 balls against Somerset, just before his injury.
Shaw’s most recent appearance for the Indian team was in the home T20Is against New Zealand in February. However, he faced a tough period during his stint with the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023, playing in only eight of the 14 matches and scoring 106 runs. Consequently, he missed selection for India’s secondary squad for the T20Is in Ireland as well as the Asian Games.
Shaw represented West Zone in the Duleep Trophy in July before heading to the UK to participate in the one-day competition for Northants.
Plans for a brief stint in red-ball cricket before the 50-over matches fell through due to delays in his visa processing. As of now, Shaw has confirmed his return to Northamptonshire for the 2024 season, where he will play in various formats.
