Premier League referees body to review goal-line error in Sheffield vs Villa match

Premier League referees have taken a strict call on reviewing the goalline technology failure that denied Sheffield United a clear goal in their 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Wednesday. As the BBC reported it on Thursday, Premier League officials faced backlash for the failure of the goal-line technology yet again as it has happened in the past on numerous occasions.

It was the league’s first match after over 100 days as the league was stalled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Villa’s keeper Orjan Nyland carried the ball over his line in a defensive in a mix-up just before halftime.

Referee Michael Oliver, pointing to his watch, we know that the technology is not able to figure out whether the ball crosses the line and there was no intervention from Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

One of the officials said in the statement “Under the IFAB protocol, the VAR can check goal situations, however, because the on-field match officials did not receive a signal, and the unique nature of that, the VAR did not intervene,”.

However BBC has a different take on it as they viewed this review in a very different way as they said: “However, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body responsible for match officials in English professional football, will now discuss how a similar incident in the future can be handled,”.

Hawk-eye being the technology that was used till now is not worked well as the official has apologized for that as those seven cameras which are used around the goal line area which was hindered by the keeper, defender, and post have not yielded correct results.
