Novak Djokovic hit on the head in Italian Open

Novak Djokovic, Italian Open

Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one ranked tennis player, had a bit of a scare at the Italian Open on Friday, May 10. After his easy second-round win, Djokovic was signing autographs for fans when a water bottle fell on his head.

The incident left Novak Djokovic clutching his head and immediately kneeling on the ground. The Serbian remained crouched on the ground for several seconds as support staff ran to his aid and was eventually helped off the court.

Tournament organizers quickly clarified that there was no malicious intent involved. Thankfully, footage confirmed it was just an accident.

The tournament said in a statement on social media, “Novak Djokovic on leaving the Central Court at the end of his match was hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs (for) spectators.”

“He underwent appropriate medication and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel.”

Djokovic later took to social media to assure fans that he was alright. “Thank you for the messages of concern,” he wrote. “This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.” This means he is still scheduled to play his next match against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.

Novak Djokovic Celebrates Laureus Award Win

Despite the scare, this week has also been a time of celebration for Djokovic. Just before the Italian Open began, he was awarded the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award for a record-extending fifth time.

“I am incredibly honoured to have won my fifth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award,” Djokovic said. He reflected on his journey, mentioning his first win in 2012 and the excitement he and his fans shared over the past year. “I think back to 2012, when I won it for the first time as a 24-year-old. I am very proud to be here 12 years later, reflecting on a year that brought me and my fans a lot of excitement and success,” he added.

Djokovic especially highlighted his emotional return to the Australian Open in January, where he secured his record-breaking 10th Australian Open title. He also acknowledged the crucial role of his team and competitors who push him to be his best.

“It was thrilling to return to Australia last January and win my 10th title. It is a tournament that is so dear to my heart and set me up for an incredible 12 months. I could not have achieved so much success without an incredible team behind me, and inspirational rivals who have always pushed me to be the best version of myself.”

While the water bottle incident was a surprising event, Novak Djokovic seems to be recovering well and remains focused on the Italian Open. Fans can expect to see him back on court on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if he can add another title to his impressive record.
