No more use of English gaming terms “esports” and “streamer” in France

France has officially banned the use of English gaming words “Esports” and “Streamer” in their country with an intend to preserve language purity also involving gamers as well as non-gamers to communicate easily.

As per the statement from French culture ministry, English words in the gaming sector can “block the understanding” for normal people.

So words like Pro gamer, cloud gaming and esports is now translated into jouer professional, jeu video en nuage and jeu video de competition respectively.

The other idea behind changing this name is to break the barrier of understanding among native people who knows little about gaming.

There have been several voices raised in the past by some French experts who works for Académie française stated that frequent use of English words is denting French language and culture in a big way. These changes were issued in government’s official journal which means every government worker has to follow it.

These words are banned in official places only not for regular use which clearly means two gamers in France can communicate with each other in English term and this is not the first time French government has banned English words for everyday use. These French words were picked by ministry after taking help of different newspapers and video game websites.

Many anglicisms are used in place of existing French words or expressions, inevitably leading to the gradual erasure of the French equivalents,” said the report. “Aside from fashion and sport, the internet and digital field is unsurprisingly the most strongly and visibly ‘anglicised.’” based on report published earlier this year by Academie francasise.

The gaming industry in France is flourishing at a rapid pace also it is touted as one of the biggest industry in Europe with an active base of 36 million gamers and 300 companies located in France. Gaming industry in France generated revenue close to €5.65 billion.
