The first T20 World Cup in South Africa saw one of the biggest revolutions in world cricket. India came up with its very own T20 league, the Indian Premier League. A league that was going to host cricketers from all around the globe. 12 years since its inception, the league is still the best T20 around the world. It is the most-watched and anticipated league in the world. IPL has certain rules and regulations of its own.

Indian Premier League rules and regulations are as follows:

  • IPL is played in a round-robin format. IPL currently comprises of 8 franchises, each franchise will play 2 matches with the 7 oppositions, one at home ground and the other away.
  • Qualification for playoff rules and regulation states that the top 4 teams shall qualify for the playoff and if two teams or more have the same amount of points post the league stage, the net run rate of the teams will be considered for qualification.
  • The playoff includes two qualifiers for final and an eliminator. The table topper and runner up will face off in the first qualifier, the winner moves on to the final. The loser moves to the second qualifier where it meets the winner of the eliminator(third place vs fourth place). The winner of qualifier two then faces the winner of qualifier one in the final.
  • IPL rules and regulations have a mention that only 4 overseas players can make it into the playing 11 for a franchise. The composition will be of 7 Indian players and 4 overseas players, a franchise can play with less than 4 overseas players if it wants to.
  • IPL squad size rules and regulations currently set a limit of a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 players. A franchise can have of squad size ranging from 18 to 25, a franchise can only purchase a maximum of 8 overseas players.
  • While representing any franchise of the IPL, players can only use clothing and sponsored products that are approved by the BCCI.
  • A player from any franchise is bound to be paid in the currency he requests within the deadline according to the exchange rate prevailing at that time. A player has a contract of one year initially that can be extended to another two years at maximum.
  • Indian Premier League rules and regulations state that a player is bound to participate in all IPL matches and can also represent the franchise in a maximum of 6 friendly matches. Other basic cricketing laws or rules and regulations used in the Indian Premier League are as per the BCCI and ICC rule book.
