IPL 2024: Struggling Mumbai Indians Get a Boost as Suryakumar Yadav Returns to Training
There is good news for the struggling Mumbai Indians (MI) as their star batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, is back in action. After a long injury layoff, India’s Mr 360 hit the nets on April 5th in Mumbai, raising hopes that he might even play in their next match against the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Mumbai Indians are currently at the bottom (10th position) of the points table after losing their first three matches. The team, led by Hardik Pandya, is desperate for a turnaround, and Yadav’s return could be the spark they need.
The 33-year-old batsman has been out of the cricket field since January 2024 due to a double injury. First, an ankle injury he picked up during India’s tour of South Africa and then a sports hernia surgery. But judging by his training session, Yadav seems to be back in top form.
He was the first one to arrive at the Wankhede Stadium for practice, an hour before his teammates. He wasted no time, stepping into the nets for a solo batting session that lasted over an hour. It wasn’t about pushing himself too hard, it was about getting his body back in rhythm and finding his batting groove. This session came just a few days after the National Cricket Academy (NCA) cleared him to rejoin the MI squad.

The right-hand batter, known for his aggressive batting style, displayed his trademark shots during the practice. He faced throwdown specialists and even MI spinner Kumar Kartikeya. During this session, he showcased his ability to hit the ball cleanly to all parts of the ground. He was middling most of his strokes, and fans will be happy to see him practice his signature flick shot over fine leg.
While Yadav stole the show, there was other training happening at the Wankhede. The team is coming off a short break after a trip to Jamnagar, following their third consecutive defeat in the ongoing tournament – a 6-wicket loss to the Rajasthan Royals on April 1st.
In the nets next to Yadav, David Warner, the explosive Australian batsman from the Delhi Capitals, was having a long session himself. Interestingly, Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy bowler, Mohit Awasthi, was seen bowling to the DC batsmen during their training. This might be a hint of the strategies both teams are working on for their upcoming clash.
With Suryakumar Yadav back in the mix, the batting order of MI looks much stronger. His return will not only boost the team’s morale but also provide them with much-needed firepower at the top. The question remains – will he be fit enough to play in the next match? Only time will tell, but his training session has definitely given MI fans a reason to be optimistic.
