India Sign Off SAG 2019 With Record Haul Of Medals

The Indian contingent rewrote the history books as they concluded the South Asian Games with their highest medal tally in the tournament’s record. The Indian squad clinched a total of 310 medals, including 172 gold, 93 silver, and 45 bronze medals.

Earlier, India’s highest total was 309 medals in the 2016 edition of the South Asian Games that was held at Guwahati & Shillong and by pocketing 310 medals this time the nation broke its own record. However, the yellow metals won at this 13th-Edition of ‘SAG’, was 15-Less than 2016-edition.

Hosts Nepal followed India in the medals tally as they concluded the 13th edition of SAG with a total of 204 medals. The hosts won 51 gold, 60 silver and 95 gold medals. Sri Lanka took the third spot in the medals table with 251 medals in total including 40 gold, 83 silver and 128 bronze medals.

On the ultimate day of the SAG in Nepal, India clinched 18 medals that included 15 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. The Indian pugilists were on song as they fetched six gold medals and 1 silver. Vikas Krishnan and Pinki Rani guided India to 6 medals on the final day.

The men’s and Women’s basketball team from India also casketed gold medals by outshining Sri Lanka (101-62) and hosts Nepal (127-46) in their respective final matches.

Two more gold medals were added to India’s name in the squash team event by the men’s and women’s squash team.

The competition that was hosted in three cities of Nepal namely Kathmandu, Pokhra, and Janakpur. This ‘13th-Edition of SAG’, had 338 Medal-Events, and a total of 1,014 Medals were up for grabs. The tournament saw participation from 7-Nations & 26 Sports-Disciplines. Around 7,000-Delegates, including, Athletes & Officials from 7 South-Asian Countries, took-part in 2019 SAG.

The fourteenth edition of SAG is scheduled to be held in Pakistan in the year 2022 and it will be interesting to see how India is going to approach these games given the political tension prevailing between the two nations.
