
India Clinches Gold in Mixed Relay at Asian Athletics Championship; Rupal Chaudhary Shines Bright
India’s position at the 26th Asian Athletics Championship continues to solidify, as the contingent aims to clinch medals across the varied events being organized in Gumi, South Korea.
Over 60 Indian athletes are competing at the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 this year, from May 27 to 31, aiming to go a notch higher from the previous edition held in Bangkok two years ago. This prestigious track and field event is organized by the Asian Athletics Association, which involves all the countries part of the Asian sub-continent compete against each other in different sporting events and achieve unparalleled recognition at an international level.
The 26th edition of the Asian Athletics Championships features over 2000 athletes from as many as 43 nations across the globe. Indian athletes are participating in a total of 30 medal events – 15 for men, 14 for women and one mixed team – over the five-day competition being held currently. The current President of the Asian Athletics Council is General Dahlan Al-Hamad of Qatar. A separate independent body for track and field athletics in the Asian continent came into existence in 1973 along with the first-ever Asian Athletics Championship, after several attempts to establish it earlier went futile.
India’s Performance Record
Out of all the medals secured until now, the most notable has been clinching the gold in the 4x400m mixed relay. The Indian side comprising of Rupal Choudhary, Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, Vishal TK, and Subha Venkatesan, bagged the gold medal after clocking a record timing of 3:18.12 seconds. Indian bunch successfully defended the mixed relay title at the Asian Athletics Championship and proved their mettle as a unit to the entire world.
China and Sri Lanka, who finished second and third respectively behind India in the 4x400m mixed relay final, were eventually disqualified due to technicalities associated with the event rules. Subsequently, Kazakhstan was accorded the silver medal and host country South Korea took the bronze medal away.
So far, Indian athletes have won eight medals – two gold, four silver and two bronze – and are placed third in the medal table. China leads the medal standings as on Day 2 of the Asian Athletics Championships 2025. This has been an outstanding display of performance through the different competitive events, underlying the commitment and prowess of each member of the squad.
- Running the first leg, Santosh handed India the opening lead in the contest. Rupal Choudhary did face stiff competition from China, but maintained her lead, before handing over the baton to Vishal, who extended the lead, allowing Subha to wrap up the mixed relay race in style.
- This was India’s third medal in mixed relay, having previously proudly won the gold in 2023 and silver in 2019.
- Rupal also bagged a silver in the 400m in women’s individual race event, while Pooja finished second in the 1500m race category. The former opened India’s account for the day 2, clocking 52.68 seconds to finish second in the women’s 400m final.
- Fellow Indian Vithya Ramraj was placed fifth with a time of 53.00 seconds. Shortly after, Pooja won the second silver for India, clocking 4:10 sec in the women’s 1500m, just ahead of compatriot Lili Das, who finished fourth with a timing of 4:13 sec.
- With Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra skipping this Asian Championship Gumi meet, India’s young javelin throwers Sachin Yadav and Yashvir Singh will have the opportunity to share the field with reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan in South Korea.
- Both emerging throwers from India will aim for a gold and try to emulate the kind of performance Neeraj Chopra has exhibited at the global stage.
- Yoonus Shah claimed a bronze medal in men’s 1500m race event and took the country’s overall tally to five, including a gold claimed by Gulveer Singh in the 10,000m athletic event.
- In other events, long jumpers Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan have made it to the final of the women’s long jump event, with the event slated to take place soon.
