Harry Maguire has been named as the new Manchester United captain just five months after joining the club from Leicester City. The England center-half succeeds left-back Ashley Young, who is close to completing a move to Inter Milan. The England center back, Harry Maguire, 26, has made 29 appearances for the Red Devils since his £80m move from the King Power Stadium in August.
Maguire will take the armband from Ashley Young, who is expected to complete his move to Inter, pending a medical on Friday.
“Harry has come in and been wearing the captain’s armband and he will keep wearing it,”
“He has been a leader in the group and I have been not surprised but impressed with his leadership skills.”
Talking about Young’s impending switch, Solskjær explained why the former England international had been granted permission to leave.
“Well, to be fair, I think it was for Ashley, you know,”
“He is 35 in the summer and, if he gets a two-year contract somewhere, I think it’s up to him to take that. We weren’t ready to offer that.
“He’s been a good servant for the club. He’s been captain and he’s won trophies, leagues, cups, but we’ve got players coming through So it was time now, then. When Ashley’s head and mindset was on ‘yeah, I want to try this’, why not do it now?
Young became subject to interest from Inter Milan earlier in the month and his desire to move led to him being left out the team. After eight-and-a-half years in Manchester, the winger turned defender will today have a medical to seal his exit. Solskjaer confirmed that a two-year contract offer was on the table from Antonio Conte’s team, where he is seen.

Harry Maguire: the new Captain of United. I think it’s a good decision. In a short period of time he’s shown himself to be a leader at the back, a vocal figure and sets a good example to others. Many may have wanted De Gea, but I don’t think Maguire is a bad choice at all. pic.twitter.com/61S6N6LizI

Harry Maguire, a ridiculously overpriced CB signed from Leicester only half a season ago is the only reasonable option to be the captain. This club is dead

David De Gea carries these clowns for 3 seasons in a row. Harry Maguire walks in, plays 20 games and gets the captain armband ahead of De Gea because slabhead.

Longevity does not automatically grant captaincy. DDG has been a fantastic servant and captain at times but Ole works with the players every single day, if he deems Maguire a better leader within the squad then he is the right man for the role. Back him. #MUFC pic.twitter.com/3XQ0xtZYqi

Happy with this. Harry has brought an assurance to the back line and has lead by example with his performances. The right man for the role ©️ #mufc #harrymaguire https://t.co/LpDWdu9aNo
