Sunday was a dream day for sports lovers. Not just the fact that there was a Wimbledon final and a Cricket World Cup final going on, but the factor that these were the longest spectacles in their respective competitions.
While Federer and Djokovic played the longest ever Wimbledon final, lasting 5 hours and 47 minutes, England and New Zealand’s final ended in a tie, forcing it into a Super Over. This was the first instance where a World Cup final went that far. Fans were up for treat till late night to witness special sporting action.
Though the players and the team would be more than happy just winning the title and the respect, but today, money does matter.
Who got what?
If we look at the prize money for both events, both had lucrative sums on offer. The total prize money for the Cricket World Cup was $10 million (Rs 69.6 crore) which was to be divided amongst all members, where the winner pocketed $4 million, while the runners-up ended with half of it, earning $2 million. Each of the losing semi-finalist received $800,000. Though this was the highest prize purse for a Cricket World Cup, it wasn’t as high as that for some other sports like tennis and football.
To put it into perspective, Wimbledon had a total prize money of $49 million dollars (or Rs 341 crore), five times that of the ICC World Cup 2019 prize money. The Men’s and the Women’s singles winner each got $3.14 million.prize money, which is almost as good as what the entire English team got.
