The much-anticipated 2023 ODI World Cup has been subject to alterations in its schedule, with nine matches being rescheduled. One aspect of contention has been the consecutive matches slated to take place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Given these apprehensions, the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) reached out to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to discuss a possible accommodation.
HCA Dilemma
HCA’s reservations revolved around the hosting of back-to-back matches on October 9 and 10 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The association was eager to ensure a seamless and efficient execution of the matches, and they believed that a change in the schedule might be beneficial.

BCCI Firm Stance
However, the BCCI, the governing body responsible for cricket in India, has firmly declined any alterations to the schedule. Discussions between the BCCI and the HCA took place, wherein it was conveyed that making changes at this juncture would pose significant challenges. With just a little over a month left before the World Cup kickstarts, the BCCI underscored the logistical complexities associated with last-minute modifications.
HCA Acceptance
Following the discussions, the HCA accepted the BCCI’s decision. Consequently, the association will proceed with hosting the scheduled matches on October 9 and 10 as originally planned. This entails the match between the Netherlands and New Zealand on October 9, followed by the clash between Sri Lanka and Pakistan on the subsequent day.
Collaborative Efforts and Assurances
Durga Kumar, a member of the team appointed by the Supreme Court administrator L Nageswara Rao, elucidated the cooperative approach between the HCA and the BCCI. Kumar acknowledged the communication with the BCCI and highlighted their recognition of the challenges involved in reconfiguring the schedule.
BCCI’s vice-president, Mr. Rajeev Shukla, had already expressed the intricate nature of last-minute adjustments. Despite the situation, efforts were underway to ensure the smooth execution of the matches. Kumar also pointed out that the city’s police commissioner had pledged full support for the event’s successful management.
Hyderabad’s Host Responsibilities
Hyderabad is set to host a total of three league-stage matches and two warm-up matches as part of its hosting responsibilities. The first league-stage match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium will feature Pakistan and the Netherlands.
Practice Venue Shuffle
However, the hosting of consecutive World Cup fixtures at Hyderabad has prompted a change in practice plans. Due to the Netherlands vs. New Zealand match scheduled for October 9, Sri Lanka and Pakistan will need to practice at an alternate venue in the city ahead of their clash on October 10. While there were initial expectations of practice sessions at the Uppal Stadium, the Gymkhana ground has been designated as an alternative practice venue, ensuring that the teams have ample preparation time.
Countdown to the Spectacle
The 2023 ODI World Cup is slated to commence on October 5 with a thrilling rematch between England and New Zealand. The opening match will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the same venue where the tournament’s final is scheduled to take place on November 19. Cricket enthusiasts worldwide are eagerly anticipating the event, which promises to deliver enthralling encounters and intense competition on the field.
