Australia to send 472 athletes in upcoming Tokyo Olympics

Australian Olympic Committee confirmed on Sunday that they will send 472 athletes to the upcoming marquee event which will be the country’s second-highest number as compare to 482 athletes for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Out of 472 athletes (254 will be women and 218 men) will compete in 33 sports event are already in Japan Finetunning their preparations for Olympics which were postponed for a year due to global health crisis.

Due to coronavirus some of the athletes could not take part in the qualification tournaments getting canceled which is second in size to 482 who went to Athens in 2004.

“I would like to pay tribute to those athletes for whom the postponement and global environment prevented them for being a part of the team” said Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman.

Mary Hanna 66 years old will become Australia’s oldest Olympic will be taking part in the upcoming marquee event while her fellow equestrian athlete Andrew Hoy will be competing in a national record eighth game at the age of 62.

The Australian softball professional teams arrived on June 1st to play warm-up games against local professional teams and will be the first Australian athletes to compete in the games when they take on Host Japan two days before the Opening ceremony.

This year Olympics will not have fans from all over the world to witness games in Tokyo due to COVID-19 but still, the call on local fans needs to be taken.
