AFC Champions League: Mumbai City FC lose 4th Consecutive tie

Two-time Indian Super League Shield winners Mumbai City FC suffered their 4th consecutive loss of the season in Asian Champions League group stages. They are yet to win a single match in Asia’s top tier club competition and their latest setback came against Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal who defeated Mumbai by 2-0.

This much awaited fixture at the DY Patil Stadium was Mumbai’s 2nd home game of the AFC Champions League as Pune’s Balewadi Stadium had hosted City’s opening ACL game against Nassaji Mazandaran which remained in favor of the Iranian outfit.

After that, Mumbai City took trips to Uzbekistan for a 3-0 loss against Navbahor followed by a trip to Al-Hilal for a heavy 6-0 loss. And last night Al-Hilal travelled to Mumbai for the much awaited clash which created heated moments of its own.

Mumbai’s right back Mehtab Singh received 2 yellow cards which made their defense even more weak. Mehtab received marching orders by the referee after he got into a momentary fight with Al-Hilal striker Aleksander Mitrovic in th 54th minute.

It was only after those 8 minutes that the visitors broke the deadlock and opened the scoreline. Serbia’s Aleksander Mitrovic doubled Al-Hilal’s lead in the 85th minute. On aggregate, Mumbai City lost by 8-0 to Al-Hilal across both legs home and away.

Last night’s loss totally ended Mumbai City FC’s hopes of proeeding to the round of 16 of Asian Champions League. An interesting fact is that Mumbai are yet to lose a match in domestically but Continentally, Mumbai’s season has been absolutely poor.

Up next they will take on Nassaji Mazandaran on a return fixture at Iran.
