WPL 2023 : The inaugural season is already a success as the quality of Cricket is unmatched!

Women’s Premier League is proving that the quality of Women’s cricket not only in India but all around the world will see a major spike in the years to come. Increasing competition as well as quality were one of the major perspectives and reasons behind WPL’s initiation and the first 2 match days have delivered.

In the opening match 2 days ago, Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians Women battered Gujarat Giants both by ball and bat. After batting first, MI Women first registered a total of 207 (in just the first match) and then bowled out the opposing team for just 64 runs!

As a result, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side won WPL’s first ever fixture by an unbelievable margin of 143-runs. That margin was was also the highest ever in Women’s T20 cricket around the world. It goes without saying that WPL is getting off to a similar start as the IPL in 2008.

And after the opening day’s hangover, Match day 2 brought more even more quality cricket. Sunday’s in Indian franchise cricket means Double headers and the first WPL weekend saw RCB Women go against DC Women while UP Warriorz debut against Gujarat Giants.

Boy oh Boy! The first match was an absolute cracker. It began with Capitals openers Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma’s outstanding 1st inning assaulting of Bangalore’s bowling line-up. The Aussie-Indo pairing smashed 72 off 43 and 84 off 45 to stand for a 162-run partnership for the first wicket in their very first match.

Thanks to the following batters – Marizanne Kapp and Jemimah Rodrigues, DC reached a very safe total of 223 runs and RCB in return were folded for 163 runs thanks to another high quality performance from Capitals’ left-arm pacer Tara Norris.

The 24-year old is the sole Associate nation representative and just like her name, Norris literally reached the stars. The USA, Pennsylvania born Pacer took WPL’s first ever 5-wicket haul and also removed some of the biggest names in world cricket.

She will not forget her first WPL scalp for sure. Norris bowled a dangerous looking Aussie legend Ellyse Perry who was playing at 31. 20 of Perry’s 31 runs came from 5 fours and her strike rate was at 163.16 at the time of departing to an associate nation bowler.

Later on, Disha Kasat, Richa Ghosh, Heather Knight and Kanika Ahuja fell prey to Tara Norris who also became the man of the match for figures of 5/29.

The final highlight before concluding this article was another Fifer in the 2nd match of the double header. This time it was Ireland born Australian bowler Kim Garth. Her 5-wicket haul came right after the first of WPL but Kim Garth’s fifer unlike Tara Norris’s could not help Gujarat Giants earn a Win.

But Garth’s outstanding bowling performance will be a positive for Gujarat Giants in the upcoming fixtures of WPL 2023. Stay tuned.
