Lionel Messi Statement for Not Choosing Barcelona
Messi, in a joint interview, with Mundo Deportivo and SPORT, said he obviously wanted to return, during which he also revealed the reason for joining Inter Miami.
“I was really happy to be allowed to return, but, I did not want to be in the same scenario again: wait to see what would happen and put my future, so to say, in someone else’s hands, after having seen what I experienced and the exit I had in 2021,” said Messi.
“I wanted to make my own choice while considering my family and myself. There were still a lot of other things that needed to be done even though I had heard that La Liga had agreed that everything would be good for me to return. I had heard that [Barcelona] had to decrease player salaries or sell players, and I really didn’t want to go through that,” Messi added.
Disproving the rumours, Messi clarified, “Had it been a matter of money, I would have gone to Saudi Arabia or some other place that would offer more money.”
“There was no signed or written contract, just that a proposal got passed over. We never had a word in terms of money. There was just intent”, he said.
I wanted to take my own decisions, for myself and my family. A bit tired, Messi mentioned the reason why he snubbed Barca. Although he also pointed out that he would be happy if it happened, nonetheless. World Cup winner Messi clearly stated that it was never a question of money.
