Boult Bolsters NewZealand’s ODI World Cup Hopes with Anticipated Return

ODI World Cup: Trent Boult

Despite not having a national contract, seamer Trent Boult might play again for New Zealand at the ODI World Cup later this year, according to Black Caps coach Gary Stead. Boult chose not to sign a contract with New Zealand Cricket last year, allowing him to participate in the lucrative T20 leagues around the globe.

He signed a “casual playing agreement” rather than being on the list of players who were given a core deal on Thursday, according to New Zealand Cricket. Stead believes that Boult can continue his strike partnership with the test captain Tim Southee at the upcoming 50-over ODI World Cup in India, which begins in October.

Trent has indicated he will be available for the World Cup, and we are having good contacts with him,” Stead told the press. “From our perspective, he’s one of the best ODI bowlers in the world, so barring injury, I think it’s highly likely that he would be part of our squad.”

Boult, who played for the Black Caps at the 2022 Twenty20 World Cup, was left out of the New Zealand team for this year’s drawn home Test series with England and the 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka after being released from his central contract last year.

Boult, who has taken 317 Test wickets, could still join the Black Caps’ five-day team for the home series against South Africa and Australia later this year, according to Stead.

“That’s still being talked about right now. Trent is committed to other leagues, so we are simply working through that and the implications,” Stead continued.
