West Indies players to wear 'Black Lives Matter' emblem

The West Indies players will be seen sporting a ‘Black Lives Matter’ emblem on their jerseys when they tour England for the three-Test series on their upcoming tour. Windies players will carry the logo on the collars of their shirts to protest the racism against black people in sports.

The logo has been designed by Alisha Hosannah and has been approved by ICC. The logo has already featured in the jerseys of all the 20 Premier League football teams when the English competition resumed earlier this month.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder also raised his voice against the killing of American George Floyd:

“We believe we have a duty to show solidarity and also to help raise awareness.” he said.

Alisha Hosannah is the fiancee of the English footballer, Troy Deeney. Her logo got a last-minute nod from the ICC after she was contacted by the Cricket West Indies for the approval.

Holder took the stand by further stating:

“This is a pivotal moment in history for sports, for the game of cricket and for the West Indies cricket team,” Holder said. “We have come to England to retain the Wisden Trophy but we are very conscious of happenings around the world and the fight for justice and equality.

“As a group of young men, we know of the rich and diverse history of West Indies cricket and we know we are guardians of the great game for a generation to come.”

West Indies players will be seen wearing those jerseys during this week’s first-class four-day warm-up match at Emirates Old Trafford starting today. The first test match of the series will start on July 8 next month at the Rosebowl Cricket Ground.

On the other hand, England players will be seen wearing blue bands to show their support for the contribution of the NHS staff during the pandemic from the last three months. The ECB had also announced that players would be wearing jerseys with the names of the supports staff and health care workers on it.
