West Indies Cricketers not getting the salaries since January

Some cricket boards always have some sort of issues with players be it Srilankan Cricket Board or West Indies Cricket Board. Caribbean players miss their presence on the national side and play for the global t20 leagues as they have issues with cricket board when it comes to the salary hike.

Recently the report which has surfaced about West Indies Cricket (CWI) Ricky Skerritt said two weeks ago that no consideration had been given to cut salaries of contracted West-Indies players, the commercial woes of Cricket West-Indies have tumbled out of the cupboard.

The International men players have not been paid their match fee for the home series against Ireland In January (three ODI and three T20s) and the Srilankan Tour in (Feb- March).

The International women players are owed the match fees for the tour matches they played in T20 World Cup that was scheduled in Australia.

The biggest problem is in front of domestic players as they have not received their large percentage of match fees for West Indies Championship, the regional four-day competition.

In March, CWI discontinued the competition after eight of the 10 rounds, declaring Barbados the winners of the Headley-Weekes Trophy (named after Caribbean greats George Headley and Everton Weekes.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has been struggling to honour its obligations of match fees of players since January because of the major cash crunch. The situation has become terrible considering the impact of this COVID 19.

However CWI chief executive officer Johnny Grave told EspnCricinfo that “Yes we understand that we have not paid match fees to a majority of our players as cricket West Indies is facing a tough time financially but we have paid match fees now to majority of our domestic players and those who have not been paid have been provided with the prize money.

The remaining players who have not received the match fees yet will be given soon as this is out topmost priority as of now”.

Grave told ESPNcricinfo that “we are two months behind making match fee payments. I personally emailed all the players since the end of February when they would have been due (match fees). We have apologized to all the players and we are eternally grateful to their continued patience and support”.

“We’ve been very open and honest as to why we can’t pay them and all the players know it is a priority for us to pay them as soon as we can.”

The major reason why CWI is facing the financial problems is “due to impending media rights as they hosted Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and they got loss of $22m”.
