Three areas requiring Daniel Vettori’s attention for SRH transformation in IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have appointed Daniel Vettori as their Head Coach for the upcoming IPL season, succeeding Brian Lara in this role. The previous IPL season, IPL 2023, proved to be a forgettable one for SRH as they languished at the bottom of the points table, securing only four wins out of 14 matches. This outcome was particularly disappointing for fans, given the team’s promising composition on paper, which had led many experts to anticipate a playoff berth.

Daniel Vettori is no stranger to the challenges of coaching in the IPL, having previously served as the Head Coach of RCB from IPL 2014 to IPL 2018. He has since held several coaching positions, including serving as the spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh national team and assuming the role of Head Coach for the Barbados Royals during CPL 2021. Currently, he holds the position of Head Coach for the Birmingham Phoenix Men’s team and also works as the assistant and spin-bowling coach for the Australian national side.

With such a seasoned and adept individual at the helm, the management can approach the upcoming IPL season with heightened confidence. Nevertheless, the path ahead won’t be without its challenges for the former New Zealand captain. As the new season approaches, let’s delve into three key aspects he’ll need to address and transform within SRH.

The Captain

Aiden Markram’s leadership may face scrutiny, albeit a tough evaluation, in the context of his suitability as SRH’s captain moving forward. While it remains uncertain whether Markram held substantial influence over team selection and playing XIs, his indecisiveness in crucial on-field choices incurred setbacks for SRH in several matches.

A defining instance was their defeat against the Lucknow Supergiants in the latter half of the season. In a scenario where LSG required 69 runs to win in the final five overs, Markram’s decision to entrust the pivotal 16th over to part-time bowler Abhishek Sharma backfired as the over conceded a staggering 31 runs, dramatically shifting the game’s momentum.

Though Markram showcased effective captaincy during his tenure with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, his individual performance during the IPL fell short of expectations. Unfortunately, his captaincy position constrained the team from considering his exclusion. As a new coaching regime takes shape, it appears pragmatic to opt for an Indian captain for the forthcoming season, enhancing the team’s flexibility in terms of squad selection.

The Batting Order

The SRH batting lineup underwent consistent alterations throughout the season, with each batter occupying varying positions from match to match. The impact of this frequent reshuffling on the underwhelming performance of their batters remains a subject of debate. The instability and lack of definitive roles in the batting order hindered the SRH batsmen from establishing a consistent rhythm within a particular position.

With the exception of Heinrich Klaasen, who exhibited a notable performance, the rest of the batters endured a slump in IPL 2023. Compounding the issue, Klaasen often found himself batting too far down the order at No. 6 for a significant portion of the season. Additionally, the inclusion of Harry Brook, driven by his substantial price tag, despite his unconvincing showings, added to the complexity of the batting order.

To address this predicament, Daniel Vettori must devise a clear-cut first-choice playing XI and a stable batting order. Maintaining this configuration for at least 4-5 matches before contemplating any alterations is crucial. The SRH batting lineup certainly possesses the requisite talent; what remains is unlocking the ideal combination that can harness this potential effectively.

The Constant Chopping and changing

The persistent instability and frequent reshuffling of the playing XI worked to SRH’s detriment, resulting in their prolonged struggle at the bottom of the table during most of the season. Amid this flux, a few names like Heinrich Klaasen, Mayank Markande, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar emerged as consistent contributors, while Washington Sundar’s injury compounded the selection complexities.

The bowlers endured insufficient opportunities in consecutive matches, and the conspicuous absence of Umran Malik raised perplexing questions about IPL 2023. Despite being deemed fit, the fast bowler remained sidelined from the playing XI, and Aiden Markram, the skipper, failed to provide a coherent explanation for this decision. This instance underscored the captain’s lack of authority and the pervasive confusion that marred their campaign.

Managing their substantial overseas talent further befuddled matters. Players like Fazalhaq Farooqi, Adil Rashid, and Glenn Phillips were notably underutilized despite the team’s evident struggles. The expectations surrounding SRH’s performance were initially high, with experts anticipating an effortless playoff entry. The team’s faltering can be attributed to the unsettling uncertainty and constant rotation within the playing XI. This is an aspect that Daniel Vettori must diligently address moving forward.
