This former Cricketer said winning the U-19 Women's T20 World cup will do wonders for Indian women cricket

Women’s cricket in India has certainly escalated and a lot of developments took place this month only. First was the announcement of the Women’s Premier League (WIPL), its franchises, teams and the amount which was splurged. Then the U-19 women’s cricket team did the absolute unthinkable.

For the first time, any Female Indian team has won the World cup of any level and a grassroot win indicates that a senior World cup for the Blues could be one the cards. Shafali Verma and co. scripted an easy victory against England in the final and their efforts will bring more attention to Women’s cricket.

Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra of course had to applause and praise the team but she also said that being the inaugural winners is indeed a big deal. And why not? This is happening for the first time and it could be the seed for many more future successes.

The Senior Indian women’s cricket team is yet to win a world cup in any format. And they have had fair amount of chances as they reached Semi-finals and Finals but choked eventually. U-19 Women’s WC triumph by India is a ground breaking story of the girls who did what the grown up women could not.

However, India has a good chance of winning a first world championship in mid-February at South Africa. The Blues had reached the Semi-finals last time around but crashed out against record breaking champions Australia.

Meanwhile this is what Anjum Chopra had to say about the young U-19 players.

“Firstly, winning the World Cup is a big deal and then the Under-19 women’s winning the inaugural World Cup by which the name of India will be written on it in golden letters is a big deal. By the way, the women’s cricket team has played the semi-finals of the World Cup many times and also played the finals many times but never won the trophy.”

“So, I understand it is a very different feeling and now it looks like we wish we were little kids and once again get a chance to play that’s how I feel. I am so excited that there is no limit to happiness, and it looks like I’ve won the World Cup and great! It’s a golden opportunity for all the cricketers for the bright future ahead of them.”Â
