The Role of Umpiring decisions in Ashes Controversies
Fans of cricket in England and Australia, both are very emotional about cricket, and especially for the Ashes. There have been instances, when their heroes were given out, against their expectation. However, we have to agree with the fact that umpires are also humans, and even they can make mistakes in giving the decisions. However, the technology is going its best to ensure that the game stays as fair as possible. In this manner, the result of the game will not be affected. However, still there are many decisions that are still in the hands of the on-field umpire only.
Controversies in past due to the umpiring
There have been several instances in the Ashes, where the fans were disheartened due to the decision of the umpire. You can go through those instances below to understand how the fans might have felt at that time.
No ball controversy in the Ashes 2021
In one of the test matches of Ashes 2021, Ben Stokes bowled 14 no-balls, and only one was called a ‘no-ball’ by the umpire. That really made the fans angry. It was questioned why technology is not being used for the purpose of declaring no balls. However, it was later on held, that technology can be used to check the no ball, only in case a wicket has fallen on that particular ball. Or else it is the duty of the on-field umpire to call for the no-ball.
Ashes series 1946-1947
Getting the wicket of Bradman was certainly the most important thing for any team. Especially in the Ashes, he was the main target for the English bowlers. However, in one of the matches of Ashes 1946-1947, he was caught at the score of 22 but was not given out. Later on, he went on to score 234.
So, these are the controversial decisions in the Ashes by the Umpires. Let’s hope this year’s Ashes is going to be even more fair.
