Angkrish Raghuvanshi, KKR, IPL 2024

The Rise of Angkrish Raghuvanshi From Hospital Rooms to IPL Stardom

Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s journey to becoming a star in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a remarkable one, starting from his days in hospital rooms. Although Angkrish Raghuvanshi may be a new face to many fans, his path to success in cricket has been far from ordinary.

Originally from Delhi, Angkrish’s love for cricket led him and his family to move to Mumbai when he was only 11 years old. This move was not just about pursuing his cricket dreams, but also to support his younger brother Krishan who was diagnosed with blood cancer as a young child.

The time Angkrish spent in the hospital with his brother had a profound impact on him. Sharing a bed with Krishan for five years instilled in him a mental toughness that would later be evident on the field. It also strengthened the bond between the two brothers, a bond that Angkrish holds dear.

Angkrish’s Mother Malika Raghuvanshi said, “Angkrish used to sleep with us in the hospitals. Those five years were the most dreadful. He will never leave his baby brother alone. Yes, we have provided him with everything, but the process of Krishan’s treatment made him mentally tough.”

Despite facing challenges, Angkrish’s cricketing talent continued to shine. He was the top scorer for India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team in 2022, scoring an impressive 278 runs. His elegant wristwork and signature shot – the pick-up flick over mid-wicket – caught the attention of many.

However, his performances in domestic white-ball tournaments were not as impressive. But his outstanding performance in the CK Nayudu Trophy, where he scored a whopping 765 runs in just nine matches, caught the eye of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The presence of his childhood coach Abhishek Nayar on the KKR support staff may have also played a role in securing Angkrish a place on the team. He made his IPL debut for KKR as an impact substitute against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Although he did not get a chance to bat in that match, he made his mark in the next game against the Delhi Capitals (DC). Walking in at number 3 with Sunil Narine on fire at the other end, Angkrish showed his talent with a quickfire 50 off just 25 balls. His knock was a display of clean and powerful hitting, with 4 boundaries and 3 sixes.
