Shubman Gill is set to become India’s future all format captain
The rise of Shubman Gill in Indian cricket continues as he is all set to be appointed as the new Test vice-captain. The young opener, who made his international debut just five years ago, has emerged as a frontrunner for leadership roles across all formats.
All of this is happening when there is already a captaincy controversy in India’s T20. Just after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the shortest format of cricket, it was expected for Hardik Pandya to take the rein as he was the vice-captain of the World Cup-winning team.

But shockingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Gautam Gambhir named SuryaKumar Yadav as team India’s T20 captain. They even removed Hardik Pandya from the vice-captaincy role and gave that responsibility to Shubman Gill. However, Rohit hasn’t announced his retirement from the ODI format, yet BCCI has named Gill as his deputy. And now the news of making Gill as Test vice-captain implies that BCCI is seeing Shubhman Gill as future all-format captain.
The decision to elevate Gill to the Test vice-captaincy was not without consideration. Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in a Test match and was Rohit’s deputy in recent series, was a strong contender. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were also in the mix, with Rahul having captained India in a Test series and Pant serving as Bumrah’s deputy.
However, the BCCI has opted for Gill, recognizing his all-format capabilities and leadership potential. The selectors believe that having a player who can seamlessly transition between different formats is crucial for the team’s success.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar highlighted the importance of having a reliable backup captain in case of injuries or loss of form. Gill’s consistent performance and leadership qualities have made him the ideal candidate for the role.
As Gill takes on this new responsibility, he will have the opportunity to learn from experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The upcoming Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand will provide him with valuable experience as he steps into the leadership role.
