Ranji Trophy 2022/23 : Mayank Aggarwal’s 110 takes Karnataka to 229 on Day 1

India’s greatest first-class cricket tournament, the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy, has reached the semi-final stages, with eight teams vying for the ultimate prize. This competition is one of India’s most important and historic, having been held since 1934.

Bombay – modern-day Mumbai – won the inaugural tournament and also have the most Ranji trophies in the tournament’s history. This season, 38 teams were separated into five groups: Elite A, B, C, D, and Plate. After weeks of battle, only eight teams remain, with four advancing to the next round.

After an exciting round of quarter-finals, the Semi-finale begin with Bengal Vs Madhya Pradesh in the first one while Karnataka squared off with Saurashtra for the 2nd Semi-final at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Saurashtra won the toss and asked the home team to Bat first. Both the teams have equal chances of reaching the finals and the next 3 days will see 2 in-form sides battle it out to either face Bengal or Madhya Pradesh.

Ravikumar Samarth and Mayank Aggarwal opened for Karnataka but the former was removed very quickly by Kushang Patel for only 3 runs. Devdutt Padikkal came at number 3 but he also failed to knit a partnership with Mayank Aggarwal as the lefty got out for 9 runs.

Nikin Jose, Manish Pandey and Shreyas Gopal came in the following order but the trio could only manage to score only 40 runs combined. However, Mayank Aggarwal stood tall and remained on the crease as wickets kept on falling down. Wicket-keeper Batsman Srinivas Sharath did stick to the crease longer than any other middle-order batter.

On Day 1 Mayank Aggarwal scored 110 runs while Sharath is currently playing at 58 off 143.

Stay tuned for Day 2 updates!
