Premier League to allow three substitutions per game for 2020-21 season

Premier League on Thursday permitted all the clubs for using up to three substitutes per game for the 2020-21 season of the competition.

The Annual general meeting of the Premier League was conducted on Thursday and the stakeholders agreed on the Video Assistant Rules (VAR) related rules. The officials also took a call on the substitute rules for the 2020-21 season of the league scheduled to begin from September.

This decision also came after the clubs voted against the idea of allowing up to five substitutes in the 2020/21. This propelled the Premier League to stick back to a maximum of three substitutes per game.

“Clubs also agreed to revert back to using up to three substitute players per match, with a maximum of seven substitutes on the bench,” Premier League said in a statement.

Earlier, the League had announced that they would use up to five substitutes per match after the season was hit by the coronavirus pandemic in order to avoid injuries.

The stakeholders also allowed the usage of the VAR, that goes under the full line protocols set by the FIFA. Initially, the VAR technology was under the International Football Association Board (IFAB), however, it was taken over by the FIFA this year.
