French Open 2024, Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner

Novak Djokovic withdraws from French Open 2024, Jannik Sinner advances

The French Open 2024 is for sure one of the most interesting tournaments that has happened on June 4th. While the Polish phenomenon Iga Swiatek extended her winning streak and was knocking on the door of her 4th French Open title, Novak Djokovic the reigning champion had to withdraw from the tournament early on because of a knee injury.

This looks to be going according to the plan for the seemingly unstoppable Iga Swiatek. The defending champion ensured she progressed to the semifinals when she thrashed 2019 finalist, Marketa Vondrousova in a two-set match 6-0, 6-2. This makes for an obvious build-up to an even more hyped final match of the year as the young American Coco Gauff defeated the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in a three-set match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic withdraws

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, aiming for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, was forced to withdraw from his quarter-final match against Casper Ruud due to a right knee injury.

The injury reportedly stemmed from a fall during a previous match and was further aggravated during his five-set victory against Francisco Cerundolo. MRI results revealed a torn medial meniscus, leaving Djokovic with no choice but to pull out. This withdrawal ended his French Open dreams.

French Open 2024: Jannik Sinner advances

Jannik Sinner, the young Italian player who dethroned Djokovic in the Australian Open earlier this year, capitalized on the Serbian’s absence. Sinner secured a convincing win over Grigor Dimitrov (6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3)) to advance to the semifinals.

This victory, however, was bittersweet. While Sinner achieved his lifelong dream of becoming the world’s No. 1 ranked player, it came under unfortunate circumstances. “Seeing Novak retiring here is, for everyone, disappointing. I wish him a quick recovery,” Sinner stated. He now holds the distinction of being the first Italian man to reach the top of the ATP rankings.

Sinner’s path to the finals might not be easy. He could potentially face a challenging opponent in the semifinals, either two-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz or former Roland Garros runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, who were scheduled to play later on June 4th.

Djokovic’s Injury a Major Setback

The withdrawal marks yet another big disappointment for Novak Djokovic regarding the rest of the season. The star tennis player already had many mishaps in the 2024 season, these include losses and injuries, raising questions about his Wimbledon and Paris Olympics 2024 involvement. This latest injury poses questions about his fitness and form in the coming months.

The French Open 2024 is underway, and as usual, there is so much that goes on behind the shots on the screen. Swiatek extended her supremacy while on the other hand, the men will be waiting for the winner of the Alcaraz-Tsitsipas match to assume the mantle of the Sinner for a shot at the title match.
