Manasi Joshi – Conquering Her 1st Gold at Para World Badminton Championship

Manasi Joshi was six when she, for the first time, held a badminton racket, and whoever knew what awaits her. Manasi, with her father, who was a former scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and was a well- Known Tennis Player, started playing badminton. Gradually after 2-3 years, her passion for badminton deepened further, and by the time she was 9-years-old, her room was decorated with trophies, which she was winning one-by-one, at her school’s organized Badminton competitions and district level competitions.

Everything seemed to be going great for her, and she could see herself as a successful badminton player in the future, but destiny had some other plans for her. Unfortunately, in the year 2011, she met with a tragic accident as she was hit by a truck, while she was traveling to work in her car.

In the accident, she survived, but she saw her left leg crushed, arms were broken and numerous other injuries., which meant that her dreams now stood shattered. Then was the time when she had to pass through her most challenging and difficult period, but she enrolled herself into Pullela Gopichand Academy, Hyderabad, where she worked hard upon herself and never gave up on her hopes for a career in Badminton. After a long period of hard work and winning her confidence back, she won here 1st medal in mixed doubles at Para-Badminton World Championship, where she got silver.

This was the defining moment in her career, after which there was no looking back for her. She won her second major achievement in 2017 when she won a bronze in women’s singles Para-Badminton World Championship at Uslan, South Korea. Despite becoming a successful Para-Badminton player, she felt incomplete, not having won a Gold thus far in her career.

After 8 years of hard work and toil in her badminton journey, she finally won a gold medal at Para World Badminton Championship in Basel, Switzerland in 2019, fulfilling her long-served dream. She defeated the defending champion Parul Parmar in Singles SL3 finals to conquer her 1st Gold.

Expressing her happiness on the victory, she took to Facebook, “I worked really hard for this and I am super happy that all sweat and hard work has paid off. This is my First Gold at World Championship”.

In talks with media, her younger sister expressing her happiness disclose her plans that will be targeting the next year Paralympics.
