Leicester City beat Sheffield United by 2-0, keeping Champions League hope alive

Leicester City defeated the 8th seed Sheffield United by 2-0 in their Premier League fixture on Friday and also kept their hopes of qualifying in the Champions League next month.

The Foxes started off well in the match and they were goal-less until the 29th minute of the game when midfielder Luke Thomas assisted a must-grabbing pass to the striker Ayoze Perez, setting the momentum for him which was followed by a superb goal. Thomas took a neat off his left foot, penetrating 15 yards inside United’s and cut the pass towards Perez and the striker left no stones unturned by surpassing Dean Henderson.

On his debut for the Foxes, Luke Thomas was adjudged as the Man of the match, not just for his assist but also sheer discipline and helping his team maintain a clean sheet throughout the game.

Virtually, the Blades have no chances of qualifying for the Champions League but they could have caused some damage to the Brendan Rodgers’ men. However, they failed to have a commanding stance after conceding the first goal.

Rodgers’ men are still in the race for qualifying in the Champions League and to no disappointment, the second goal came from the midfielder Demarai Gray off James Vardy’s assist. Jonny Evans pushed the ball towards Vardy as the duo stitched an unbreakable attack combination to lay the foundation of the second goal by Gray and subsequently, the Foxes netted their second goal in 79th minute of the match.

Leicester boss Rodgers was happy with his side’s performance and also hoped of qualifying for the Champions League for the second after getting crowned as the Premier League champions in 2016.

“The result gives us the second-highest Premier League finish in Leicester’s history. We have two games to go to create some more history,” he said.

“We all sat down at the start of the season and said, it would be a huge challenge for Leicester to get into Europe, so do that in my first season here, to guarantee that is a phenomenal achievement,” Rodgers concluded.

The Foxes maintained a clean sheet as they gained three points after the win, also keeping their qualification for the Champions League intact. They are currently at the 4th place in the Premier League rankings with 62 points and slated to meet Tottenham on Sunday.
