Joe Root smashes record-equalling 33rd Test century, Aims for Sachin’s record

England’s ace batter Joe Root smashed a record-equalling 33rd Test century during England vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test match at Lord’s. With this incredible century, Root equals the record of former England captain Alastair Cook. Meanwhile, Joe Root dedicated this hundred to former cricketer Graham Thorpe, who passed away earlier this month.

Joe Root played 12 dot balls when he was on 99, then he elegantly guided Lahiru Kumara for four between slip and gully to complete his century on 162 balls. His inning was laced with 13 fours. Eventually, he was caught by Pathum Nissanka in Milan Rathnayake’s over for 143 runs off 206 balls.

Joe Root dedicated his 33rd Test ton to former cricketer Graham Thorpe. Thorpe was Root’s long-term batting mentor, who unfortunately passed away earlier this month at the age of 55.

Joe Root has surpassed his current fab-4 rivals, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. Both batters have 32 centuries to their name. On the other hand, star India batter Virat Kohli has only 29 Test hundred till now.

Sachin Tendulkar, fondly known as the ‘God of Cricket’ in the cricketing world, has the most number of centuries, 51. Sachin has played 200 matches and 329 innings to achieve this feat, whereas, Root has played 145 matches and 264 innings to complete his 33rd Test ton.

The right-handed England batting maestro has scored 12274 runs in his Test career. Joe Root is only 33 years old and many cricket experts see him as a player who can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Test cricket. Sachin has 15921 runs in his 24-year-long Test career.

Without a doubt, Joe Root is a fantastic player, who has shown his mettle in the Test format. His recent achievement of the 33rd Test century and a mountain of runs speaks volumes for him. However, it is early to say that Root can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most Test runs in the history of cricket.
