Joe Root Smashes 34th Test Century, equals Sunil Gavaskar’s record

The second Test of the three-match Test series is being played between England and Sri Lanka at Lord’s. On the third day of this match, Joe Root registered his name in the history of cricket by scoring the 34th century of his Test career. With his 34th Test century, Joe Root has become the batsman to score the most centuries for England in Test cricket and equals the record of Sunil Gavaskar. Joe Root is also the fastest batsman to score 34 centuries for England.

Joe Root has become the batsman to score most number of the centuries in Tests for England. He scored the 34th century of his career in the second Test match against Sri Lanka being held at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Root completed his century with fours in 111 balls in the second innings of the series. However, he was out after scoring a century. Root faced 121 balls in the second innings and scored 103 runs. He hit 10 fours during his innings. Notably, Joe Root had scored a century in the first innings of this match, where he scored 143 runs in 206 balls with the help of 18 fours.

Joe Root has scored 12377 runs in 265 innings of 145 Test matches at an average of 51.14. In his career, a total of 34 centuries and 64 half-centuries have come from his bat. Second in the list of batsmen who have scored most centuries in Tests for England is former captain Alastair Cook, who has scored 33 centuries and 57 half-centuries in 291 innings of 161 matches. 

Kevin Pietersen is in third place on this list, who has scored 23 centuries in 181 innings of 104 Tests, while Wally Hammond is in fourth place with 22 centuries and Colin Cowdrey is in fifth place with the same number of centuries.

Sri Lanka won the toss in the second match and decided to bowl first. After this, England scored 427 runs based on the century innings of Joe Root and Gus Atkinson. In response, Sri Lanka could score only 196 runs in the first innings. Whereas, England scored 251 runs in the second innings with the help of Joe Root’s century and gave Sri Lanka a target of 483 runs to win. Sri Lanka faced defeat in the first match and now it will have to perform a miracle to win the second match.
