IPL 2023 : Here is everything you should know about every new rule introduced ahead of season 16!

IPL 2023 is just around the corner as defending champions Gujarat Titans will square off with 4-time Champions Chennai Super Kings for the opening tie. There is a lot of anticipation around the event this year as a lot of new rules will come into effect.

It could prove to be a revolutionary season in terms of performance as well as implementation of new rules. If the rules are successful enough then we might see the same in International cricket.

Among the new rules is the “Impact rule” which has been making a lot of noise ever since it was first discussed. For the first time ever in Cricket, we will get to see a Substitute player who can come in to the game to influence it in favor of his side.

One of the four substitutes may be chosen by the captain to serve as an impact player at any time. He may be introduced at the beginning of the innings, at the conclusion of an over, or when a wicket is taken. When bowling, an impact player cannot be called upon to bowl if the team brings him on when a wicket falls in the midst of an over.

And the player who was changed will no longer participate in the game.

The second rule to be introduced is that teams will be allowed to have 2 separate playing XIs during the time of toss and can announce their playing XI after the toss.

The 3rd rule is something which was also used in the inaugural Women’s Premier League 2023 and that is the chance to send a wide or no-ball referral to the TV Umpire.

A rule from the note read that – “(i) playing XI and 5 subs if they bat first. (ii) playing XI and 5 subs if they bowl first. Please tick on the batting first box on the team sheet for your batting first playing XI and vice versa. Depending on the outcome of the toss, the captains will exchange the team sheets accordingly.”

The BCCI have also extended the squad limit to 16 on match days in order to give the teams a better chance to use the impact player.

The final rule change will see fielding teams get penalized for a possible slow over rate or if any fielder is making any unfair movement then the batting team will receive 5 runs as a penalty and can also be called as Dead Ball.
