
Indian Wrestlers Shine Bright on Day One of UWW World Championships
In a dazzling display of skill and determination, India’s freestyle wrestlers delivered exceptional performances on the opening day of the UWW World Championships. All four Indian wrestlers competing on the day emerged victorious in their respective bouts, setting the stage for a promising campaign in this prestigious wrestling event.
Leading the charge was Abhimanyu, a 70kg grappler who caused a major upset by defeating Ukraine’s Ihor Nykyforuk, a formidable world number 7. Abhimanyu ranked 26th globally and a bronze medalist at the U23 World Championships in June, showcased his prowess by securing a resounding 19-9 victory, culminating in a victory by fall (VFA). The contest was halted 2.41 minutes into the second three-minute session, with Abhimanyu’s dominant performance in both sessions, where he seized a commanding 5-0 lead.

Next up for Abhimanyu is a pre-quarterfinal clash against Nicolai Grahmez of Moldova, promising another exciting showdown.
Meanwhile, Akash Dahiya, another Indian hopeful, commenced his campaign on a winning note, triumphing over his Moldovan opponent, Leomid Colesnic, with a convincing 10-5 verdict. Ranked 21st in the world, Dahiya is now set to face Uzbekistan’s Jahongirmirza Turobov, the sixth seed and a gold medalist at the 2021 Asian Championships.
In the 86kg category, Sandeep Mann left his mark by overpowering Dejan Mitrov of North Macedonia, achieving a decisive victory by technical superiority with a score of 10-0. His next challenge awaits in the form of Lin Zushen of China, setting the stage for an intense showdown.

India’s 125kg grappler, Sumit, too, had a successful start to his campaign. He faced Japanese wrestler Taiki Yamamoto, ranked 30th in the world, and secured a 3-1 victory. This win paved the way for a pre-quarterfinal clash with Poland’s Robert Baran, the seventh seed, and a European Championships silver medalist.
