T20 cricket’s most anticipated event – the ICC T20 World cup is already underway with the group stage matches, which will see 4 teams proceed to the Super 12s of the tournament. The group stages have provided some nail biting contests and there have been a few upsets already.
The Super 12s are scheduled to begin from 22nd October and the first match will be a replay of last edition’s finale between Trans-Tasman rivals Australia Vs. New Zealand. The following day on 23rd, the biggest fixture of the tournament will see two sub-continent giants India and Pakistan meet for the 6th time in ICC T20 world cup.
With Australia hosting the event, the atmosphere inside the stadiums are going to be electrifying for all of the 45 matches. As the Super 12 begins in two days, lets know about the Venues that will host the event.
1. Melbourne Cricket Ground
Situated at the sporting capital of Australia, Melbourne Cricket ground is one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world and the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere. Filled with a lot of history, the MCG has witnessed a number of tournaments and enthralling contests. MCG also hosted the 1953 Summer Olympics as well as the Commonwealth Games in 2006. For the first time since the 2015 Cricket world cup, the stadium will feature some high-profile World cup matches including the Final in November 13th. 2. Adelaide Oval
Just like MCG, Adelaide Oval is also steeped in history and has hosted some of the best matches. The venue is manly used for Cricket and Australian Rules match but other sporting events like Rugby League, Rugby union, Soccer and Tennis have also been anchored by the Adelaide. The stadium has some of the most iconic matches being played including the first ever Day-night Ashes Test match in 2017. Due to its Aesthetic look, Austadiums.com labelled it as one of the most picturesque Test grounds in Australia if not the world. 3. The Gabba (Brisbane)
The Brisbane Cricket ground, most commonly known as the Gabba is located at the capital of Queensland – Brisbane. It is home to several teams in domestic teams in Australia like Queensland Bulls in Domestic circuit, Brisbane Heat in Men’s and Women’s Big Bash League and the Brisbane Lions in Australian Football League. Renovations of the stadium are expected to take place as it is going to host the 2032 Simmer Olympics and its capacity will also increase upto 50,000. The Gabba is one of the most attractive stadiums around the world and if we go by the traditions, the stadium hosts the first test of the Australian summer. Gabba is also the first stadium in Land down under to host an International T20 Match. It also offers scenic beauty of the nature with the Pitch renowned for its hardness and bounce. 4. Kardinia Park (Geelong)
Located at the city of Victoria, Geelong, the Kardinia Park started hosting cricket from 2016. With a capacity of 36,000 people it is home to AFL outfit Geelong Football Club and A-League side Western United. In 2016, the first cricket match was organized in the stadium as it hosted the Second T20I between Australia and Sri-Lanka where the latter team came out victorious. Kardinia Park has also hosted a few Men’s and Women’s Big Bash League. The venue will host 6 games only during the qualifying stages.
5. Bellerive Oval (Hobart)
Known as Blundstone Arena for commercial reasons, the Bellerive Oval host cricket as well as Australian rules football. With a capacity of 20,000 people, it is the second largest stadium in Tasmania in terms of capacity. Bellerive Oval is the only stadium in Tasmania to hold cricket matches. 6. Perth Stadium
The iconic stadium is now known as Optus Stadium situated at Western Australia. It is one of the magnificent state-of-the-art stadium which went into renovation in 2017 and opened in 2018 with Australia and India playing the first match after the re-opening. It has a capacity of 61,266 and it is the third largest stadium in Australia after MCG and Stadium Australia. When Australia played New Zealand between December 12 and December 16, 2019, Perth Stadium became the fourth location in Australia to host a men’s day-and-night cricket test match. 7. Sydney Cricket Ground
The final venue in this list is the marvelous Sydney cricket ground, which is an architectural masterpiece. This venue hosts all three formats of cricket, Australian rules football, Rugby league, Rugby union and association football. It is home for cricket teams New South Wales, Sydney Sixers and Australian Football League outfit Sydney Swans. SCG is said to have hosted matches for over 150 years with a capacity of 48,600 people.
